Okay, well, not everything. The Comments section of just about anything ever still sucks. But the amount of cool, geek-oriented stuff being produced every damn day is amaaaaaazing. Just the random things that come across my Twitter feed make me do a little happy chair dance.
So, I decided to share some of the things I've seen/read/watched that are fandom/geek related and make me happy.
Books:Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor. The writing is twisty and gorgeous, you can practically taste it. I read the novel in, hmm, two days. That's not FULL days, but two days of reading time. So, that's about five hours. I READ THE ENTIRE NOVEL IN FIVE HOURS WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING HERE STILL GO BUY IT.
Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole. There's literally nothing I didn't love about this book. All the main characters are people of color, some are straight, some aren't, not one of them is a cliche. The romance, and the sexy times, is to DIE FOR. Sexual tension: whoooooo smokin' hot. The actual sexy times scenes: YAS BITCH. Also, there's a crazy, possible apocalyptic blackout across the world and people are losing their shit, so that's kind of fun. For us. Not the characters. I'm impatiently waiting for book two in this series...Dead Things by Stephan Blackmoore. I will freely admit to knowing this gentleman and having a genial Twitter relationship in which he occasionally sells his soul to shill my stories to his followers. HOWEVER...his books are kickass and if you don't read them, you're missing out. Big time. Actually, I've read both Dead Things and the second book, Broken Souls, and really can't recommend them enough. If you like John Constantine (any version, really) or Harry Connolly, you'll probably like Eric Carter as well. A guy in a rough spot, who wants to do the right thing, mostly, but can't seem to manage it without hurting nearly everyone he cares about and screwing up royally. But a likeable poor shmuck.
COMICS:
Here are my thoughts on Image/Skybound's series Invincible. It was an amazing issue, especially for one I picked up on a whim because it was a mere $.25. In one issue, the Invincible team won me over, and I've since added this series to my pull list at my LCS.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl! I can't squeee enough over this reboot of one of Marvel's silliest, most fun characters. So much love for this comic. First, the entire layout is amazing. There are almost hidden little gems everywhere. Small asides, hilarious minor details. Second, Doreen Green is loud, goofy, loyal, clever, dorky, brilliant, sassy, and has a booty that won't quit. Mostly because 85% of it is her huge squirrel tail tucked into the bum of her pants. She has an adorable squirrel sidekick, Tippy, and a fantastic, quirky college roommate, Nancy. Together, and separately, this trio gets into all sorts of trouble, and fights crime, despite the fact that Nancy has no clue that her roomie has a secret identity! If you like laughing (really, who doesn't), then this is the comic for you. Silk (out of the Spiderverse series). So far, there are only two issues out, but I read and loved them both. Since I don't read any of the Spiderman comics, and never really have, I didn't know Cindy Moon at all before picking up Issue #1 at my local store. I immediately added it to my pull list, for several reasons. One, she's got a smart mouth and spidey silk swingin' skills, but she's also unsure of herself and can snarl things up a bit. I like that she's not an angsty mess, but also not a brash superhero, confident in her ability to step in and save the day. There's quite a backstory, which is slowly unraveling, and it's kind of sad and tragic. You can tell Cindy is lonely and out of
step with the times (having spent the last decade locked up alone in a bunker), but she's also determined to make a new life for herself.
The second reason I'm sticking with Cindy Moon is that we don't have enough women or women of color as lead characters in comics. This is a great comic! It deserves to stay, and be expanded! I worry a little, since Marvel launched Spider-Gwen and Silk at the same time, that as per usual, if one of them has to be let go, it will be Cindy.
The third reason I put this comic on my list is that there's a possibility for a second-chance romance there, and I'm a sucker for a good romance. After all she's been through, I want Cindy to get her Happily Ever After.

ReplyDeleteI'll give the other two books a try just 'cause you said so. Mwah.
I did! I've seen so much about the trilogy online that I decided I had to try the first one. I'm so glad I did. :D
